Teign Maritime and Shanty Festival 2023 – September 8th, 9th and 10th

The 2021 Teign Maritime & Shanty Festival was an enormous success. Teignmouth and Shaldon were bustling with visitors, which brought much needed business into the area and raised record funds for our nominated charities. Feedback from performers and presenters was tremendous, with a huge number keen to be included in the next festival and many hoping our festival will not get too big, so as to maintain the personal aspect that endears it to so many. The committee share this view and strive to deliver the very highest quality in all respects. Achieving this requires a huge effort from us and our vast array of supporters – without whom we simply could not stage such an event. As you know, we are ambitious and are now set on making the next festival even better than the last. Our committee are buzzing with some cracking ideas as to how this will work, including headline acts, even more variety, and of course a tall ship or two, so watch

Record charity donation for 2021

We are delighted to announce that following the success of the 2021 Teign Maritime & Shanty Festival we have been able to donate £3,000 to our nominated charities, each receiving a cheque for £750. In both 2018 and 2019 we were able to contribute a total of £2,000 and were concerned that in a year where we are all emerging from the effects of Covid that we may struggle to match that. But thanks to the glorious weather, increased visitor numbers and their kind generosity, we are able to increase our donation by 50%. As reported in local papers and online, the Teign Maritime & Shanty festival was an enormous success, with increased visitor numbers and the Teign Estuary community being alive with very many happy people. We were humbled and honoured to receive a letter of congratulations from the Mayor of Teignmouth, celebrating our achievement on holding such a successful and safe festival. Many thanks again, to all our supporters and volunteers for making

Festival makes front page news!

We are front page news! The local papers are celebrating the success of the festival, which brought together the towns of Shaldon and Teignmouth, who did the occasion proud. As we always say, we could not make this festival happen without the hard work and dedication of our very many supporters, in all their forms. If you would like to get involved, either by volunteering in some capacity or placing an advert in our very high quality full colour programme, then please e-mail info@teignshantyfestival.co.uk

Here ’tis! The printers have finally pulled their finger out and delivered the program and these can be purchased at the following locations – we would like to thank all of these selling locations for their kind and invaluable support. Please buy a programme as it is helps fund the festival and our charitable contributions – no programme sales would mean no festival next year and no charitable contributions, which would of course be terribly sad. Keeping us all safe

Ahoy there!   The stars are lining up and the first weekend in September looks set to be a belter!  Don’t forget your sunscreen!   Prior visitors will know we run a tight ship at the Teign Maritime & Shanty Festival and can navigate a rough sea.  Rest assured your safe enjoyment has been our number one priority from the start.   We have embraced the need to adjust and learn to live with the virus and have made the necessary changes to enable this.   Our established venues are spread out on either side of the Teign estuary in the tourist towns of Teignmouth and Shaldon.   For 2021, most singing takes place at ‘outside’ venues.  The few venues where singing takes place ‘inside’ are large e.g. churches, have restricted capacity, as do maritime venues, and we will be encouraging you to wear a face mask.  If you forget your mask, free ones will be available.   Our festival is open, free to attend and

River Teign Shellfish

Following on from the theme of shellfish in the recent “sieve and riddles” post, the Teign Maritime Shanty Festival are delighted to be able to announce that River Teign Shellfish will also be joining us at the 2021 festival to talk about their history and the methods that they use. River Teign Shellfish are a family run business, led by father and son team Barry and Matt. With over 40 years experience of team work on the River Teign, the quality shellfish that they harvest can be found in the best restaurants and eateries across the UK. River Teign Shellfish were featured on Channel 4’s “Devon and Cornwall” television programme and many of the methods used to farm their quality shellfish haven’t  changed in decades, however, whilst they have many years experience in the industry, they are anything but stuck in their ways. Indeed, the programme showcases their new venture to harvest their mussels further out to sea, after they lost nearly 70 tonnes worth of shellfish due

Shanty Festival Weekend Riddle

This weekend should have seen the Teign Maritime Shanty Festival in full swing and in brilliant sunshine! So to take away some of those blues, here is a riddle and some great news: What is the difference between a Sieve and a Riddle? Well, according to Steve Overthrow, the only Traditional Sieve & Riddle Maker in England, the difference is that a Sieve has a pre-made mesh trapped between two pieces of wood, and a Riddle is completely woven by hand, wire by wire. Steve first heard of Sieve and Riddle making via the Heritage Crafts Association’s red list of endangered crafts in June 2017. He had mainly been working for a vintage car restorer for the 9 years leading up to that, specialising on cars from the 1920’s and 30’s. That job was about to move up country and he was looking for something heritage linked to continue to be involved with, which also allowed him to stay at home here in the West

Johanna Lucretia extra trip!!! Something to look forward to in 2021 – but act quickly!

The 11 berths to sail from Plymouth to Teignmouth on the tall ship Johanna Lucretia this year sold out in just a few hours! With the cancellation of the 2020 Teign Maritime Shanty festival, these berths have all been transferred over to the week leading up to the 2021 festival, which is being held over the weekend of Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th September and the Johanna Lucretia will be moored at Teignmouth for the whole of that weekend. We are aware that there were a large number of disappointed people who were unable to get a booking due to the tremendous demand for places and so, in conjunction with the Island Trust, were are delighted to announce that an additional 11 paid berths are now available for her return journey from Teignmouth to Plymouth the following week, sailing from Teignmouth on Monday 6th and arriving in Plymouth on Friday 10 September. NEW DATES FOR 2021 FESTIVAL

NEW DATES FOR 2021 FESTIVAL: Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th September 2021 Dear Shanty folk, Please note that our 2021 festival dates have changed from the 17th, 18th and 19th September, to the 3rd, 4th and 5thSeptember. You may already be aware that, within a few days of each other, we and our good friends in Port Isaac announced the same date for our 2021 festivals!  Didn’t see that coming.  Turns out Port Isaac set their festival back to coincide with the tide and we brought our festival forward to coincide with the same tide…BOOM! As we announced our festival shortly after Port Isaac had announced theirs, we believe it’s only right and fair that we change our date in order to resolve this.  We also want to make sure we can all go to the Port Isaac festival! We were very relieved to have been able to accommodate this change and are delighted to confirm that our visiting tall ship, the Johanna Lucretia, and
